One Shoot - Insomnia

voices in my head
growing louder and angrier

unforgiven sins, past guilts
looming larger and darker

i painted my face and wore a wig

hoping that the shadowy fingers
will not recognize me

and go away

Author's Note:  This post is for the last One Shoot Sunday of OSP.  Interview and photography credit by the talented Rosie Hardy.  Thanks Adam and Chris for all your hard work and best of luck.

This is also my contribution for Poetry Jam hosted by Jessica Maybury.    I have decided to write an "insomnia poem" for the challenge.   Happily, I don't have this problem as I fall right into sleep once I hit the pillows.

Shared with Thursday Poets Rally (July 14-20, 2011).
Thank you for the The Perfect Poet Award of Poets Rally Week 48~

  7. Love your interpretation of the photo! Luckily, I don't have insomnia either. I have the opposite problem-can't stay awake!

  8. I don't normally have this problem, either, but Thursday and Friday night I did. Could. not. fall sleep.

And so this poem of yours, and Ms. Hardy's excellent photo, speak to me. I'm going to add myself to your followers, if that's all right.

  9. you reminded me of Sylvia Plath and her bee poems, the way she repeatedly says that she turns into something else, hoping that the bees won't notice her. Nice work though.

The photography on that site is beautiful.

  10. unforgiven sins and past guilts can indeed become dark shadows and sometimes get larger than life....you captured the mood of the photo nicely heaven...love esp. the painted face and the wig part

  11. Just read a very different take on this pic over at Henry Clemmons', yet both convey the sense of being hounded that you project and that oozes from the photo. I have insomnia frequently, but it has become an old friend of the body and not a harrowing of the heart as you portray here. Solid, well-conceived and well-executed piece, Heaven. Enjoyed it much.

  20. Hm. Normally it's the clown doing the creeping out...but now, even the clown has fallen victim to the darkness!

To the work, though - fine interpretation. Dark, haunting, trapped in guilt and the cerebral confines of the mind...splendidly done.

  23. Yes, insomnia can be a nightmare scenario for many of us. Time has a way of seeing to stand still when we can't sleep!
A great write and a great read, too, thanks.

  24. Thank you for your lovely words.

The original draft of this was longer but since I wanted to participate in Sunday 160, I edited it. I couldn't fit it still but the process helped me sort my thoughts and choose which few words to use for impact. I hope I did a good job~

  29. That picture really is perfect, very scary indeed. Insomnia does lead to madness and it's unbelievably stressful, terrifying even and you've captured that perfectly!

  30. On the rare occasions when I can't sleep this is EXACTLY what happens. All those past sins are GINORMOUS. I think maybe I'll try the disguise thing too.
