Like Mexico

you look like Mexico,
                              familiar old soul

sitting in the silhouette of sunset
gazelle eyes, lips inked red as your corset
lingering notes from flamenco guitar
you play a thousand times, by the bar

each sharp crescendo, each staccato beat,
crimson, emerald and indigo bursting heat
fireworks, heady like tequila lime and salt
i drink like i don't care until
                               i am full of thunder

you smell like Mexico,
                               familiar old soul

roads under our wheels, sand everywhere
tequila lime, salt, beer on breath
summer heat blowing from the border,
Mexico gets into my head,  and suddenly

you are more than just a girl in my arms
making me wish for more than just this road trip,
when i see a shooting star
in the pale moonlight, I kiss you hard

you taste like Mexico,
                               familiar old soul

my hands reach for you as I come alive

Guitar and original music composition of Herotomost of Mexican Radio * ~ Thanks Corey ~

  2. Well now, this happens to be one of my all time favourite songs, and it has inspired a very beautiful poem. I guess when Mexico creeps into your heart, it's there to stay.

  6. Haaaaa!!!!!...that was awesome! I love the romantic lilt because that is exactly what that song is for me. Road trips, music, exploring likes and dislikes and the anticipation of new love. Anticipation...ahhhhh yes. What a great treat for me to see this, makes me feel pretty good. Thanks Grace....thats why you rock!!!!! " I drink like I don't care until I am full of Thunder......" what a great line. Heavy sigh.......

  10. I've been watching you grow as a poet on this site, and this is the pinnacle of what I have seen from you so far. Extraordinary! Mexico is one of my old haunts, and you brought it to life with such fire. Great song, and a fantastic take on it!

  12. This one is so much different than any other works I've seen from you - I loved all of them but this one was especially intriguing. Well done, Heaven.

  13. Great /s/ alliteration in the opening. LOVE this section:

"each sharp crescendo, each staccato beat,
crimson, emerald and indigo bursting heat
fireworks, heady like tequila lime and salt
    i drink like i don't care until
    i am full of thunder"

And this twist was quite moving:
"making me wish for more than just this road trip,
when i see a shooting star
in the pale moonlight, I kiss you hard"

    Beautiful work, Grace.

I now wish I was in Mexico....
I love the lyrical tone and the projected thoughts...
    I wish I could hear Corey's song...it wouldn't work for me...
I will come back n' try again...

I too love the seduction of your imagery!

  23. The song was kool, but your words blew me away. I loved them, wanted them, coveted them. Excellente. I'd even drink in Mexico to hear this.

  24. Such easy 'grace' in rendering this piece. So polished and elevated. Wonderful job. I really enjoyed it.

  25. Well grace, I would not drink in Mexico--because they would throw me out of the country--grin! (That's the truth!)

HOWEVER, I agree with Timoteo (above) as to your change, growth in content and style. Being "on the road again" (LOVE it!) with all the attendant memories, old, new, and yet to be. And you keep a continuity running throughout--nice touch!

I could have simply stated , "I like it!", and saved you all this reading--grin!
    PEACE!

  27. I enjoyed Corey's song the first time I heard it, and now I know all it needed was your poem to bring back all my memories, good and bad, from a great many visits to Mexico. Wonderfully done, Grace.

  31. This was beautiful. It provoked a slight melancholia because I live in New Mexico, an hour from the border. But due to the high level of violence there I haven't been to see, feel or taste Mexico in a long time. I miss it.

  32. Wow, this is so passionate, igniting every sense with south-of-the-border spice. I loved it.

  33. very cool..i like all the touches..the flamenco guitar and the tequila..makes it very vivid and palpable...and then the personification in the closure works really well

  39. I've lived 5 or 6 hours from Mexico for almost 22 years now, yet not been there yet. It would be just as you imagine, I think. Hot and fun and flaming with passion.

I think I know the taste of Mexico, tho. That tequila and lime!

    xoxo
