A Memorial Day




red poppy
pinned black on lapel,
mother's pride

silent guns
on field of poppies, 
son's salute

bronze coffin
flag wrapped by father,
cloudy sky

field of white crosses, 
red poppies grow row by row,
she sings bravely, free

  soft on widow's lips,      
beating heart

  6. I remember the poppies sold by volunteer firemen and the American Legion Halls and worn/waved proudly to show we honored the sacrifice of those who died and these they left behind. You give this meaning back to the poppies, make me put my heart around the widow!

  23. I am lukewarm on the haiku/senryu form, but there are a few of you that regularly post to IT that are changing my mind. This is damn good...I read these in black and white with only the poppies and lips a bright red. Crazy good Heaven.....also wanted to make sure you got my e-mail with the MP3. Happy Memorial Day!
