Preparing to fall

fear trickles
slow descent

of black and red
dewdrops, pale sheen

reflects diminishing energy
under duvet of gathering night

rusting slowly, i recall
fleeting moments like taste

of curry powder in choco-
late mousse, arching

of limbs in deep pleasure,
sated lips under the sweet rain-

waiting is short -
before i could soak earthly flavors -

the first frost falls,
its white and delicate hands heavy on my throat -

no mental preparation is adequate
for the sharp cut of separation, raw-stained

pain stinging eyes, water rising
and flooding the fragile chest --

bare of seeds and thirsty blooms,
now crumbling faster than sands--

it was never a question of
if and when, but how

in grieving and accepting,
i fall with a graceful sweep--

  2. So many phrases to like in here. The hands of frost around your throat, the inevitability of the separation, it all felt like sand falling through the timer, elegant as always...

  3. A stunning poem, Grace. Grieving and accepting -- alike in some ways, different in some others. Neither is easy!

  4. Yes, acceptance is the key, but we can grieve about it. Love the symbolism of the plant... lovely picture, too.

  5. We've had a few nights of hard frost here now. Snow expected tomorrow. Not much but, enough to let us know winter is not far away now.
Never heard of curry powder or, pepper in chocolate.
    Beautiful poem.

  9. A beautiful poem, I especially like the lines "the first frost falls,
its white and delicate hands heavy on my throat - " perhaps because the feeling is familiar.

  11. This is such a great piece of writing Heaven, Sir Knight says it best, you create vivid and wonderful pictures that stick in my mind, love it so much. It's risque and it's sultry despite being in my mind a simple ode to Fall, and there's nothing wrong with that, in fact it's the opposite.

  16. Grace--this is so beautifully written. However, it is also so gorgeously sensual that I just want to roll around in the words and images again, instead of writing an intelligent comment about it. Shame on me--that is exactly what I'm going to do.

  17. Sweet lust, and yet I read it as Sweet death. Just goes to show where my mind is.

Honestly though, I saw it, as I read, the letting go of life in that moment when you know it is gone. . .

Sorry, had a heart attack two years ago, it took me back there...

    Beautifully done!

  18. Lovely word pictures in this. Other's say death, I pictured the end of a love affair and know that intention of "handling" it well. I'd say you are sweeping gracefully.

  22. I definitely can relate to the sting of separation. I had no idea how sharp it could be, nor how uunprepared for it I was. Awesome write, Grace!

  28. Oh Grace, how aptly you are named! Your narrator, whether sky or sweat or earth or a single woman is telling a true story in the graceful sweep of couplets. We have two eyes, of course, but tears are not symmetrical.
