Until now

i walk along in my faded sweatpants
slender trees along the river framing

clear water rushing downstream
beside the long abandoned farm mill

a blanket of solitude, thick and blue
wrapped my cold shoulders this morning

i thought i heard your footsteps
follow my trail towards the thick forest

glades we love to get lost and camped,
just the two of us, don't you remember?

but no, it was just the hoot of birds
and swish tail of the frightened deer

your footprints were long covered
by mulch of shrivelled maple leaves,

fallen apples pecked by black crows,
mud of travellers searching for solace,

answers among the whispering winds,
wild flowers, black bats kneeling in prayer

still, i take these early morning walks
autumn has arrived, but until now,

i don't understand why you left

without saying

goodbye

  9. this is a rather haunting season...and for someone to leave without saying goodbye would certainly be a haunting memory as well...nicely done heaven...

I can relate to this, very much. Well written, lots of genuine feeling.

  14. This is sweet and sad - and I wonder if it can be understood, why someone would leave without saying goodbye... not by the one left behind anyway.

    Love this:

a blanket of solitude, thick and blue
wrapped my cold shoulders this morning

  16. Oh this is so touching and beautiful. Poignant, especially the final lines. I could see the forest clearly - your line "black bats kneeling in prayer" is stunning.......lovely writing.

  23. This is so very sad. I felt like I walked what is in the beginning a lovely walk through a forest, promising interesting wild life and scenic camping grounds, down to a lonely path that is too quiet and dark suddenly.

  24. Your last lines are so simple and so powerful... left that idyllic paradise without saying goodbye? ouch...

  25. love your writing, Heaven! unfortunately, i had that happen once and it is devastating not to have at least the closure of a goodbye.
