Beneath the skin

one day, i opened my eyes
and saw veins & muscles & cells

of nameless people, unwrapped tissues
pulsing with blood & fats & dirty water-

i cast my eyes down from this sight,
for i was not ready to see beneath the skin

colored of ink & stories, i hid from everyone
as if i was a freak, too sensitive, too pained to see the aches-

i harmed myself until you knocked at my door
& suddenly i see you - bare of clothes & words - the pupils

of your eyes dilated with concern,
heartbeat ticking madly along your neck like rushing waves

gathered close, i blush to see your passion
growing and the sweat dripping on the floor

your bones are softer than i thought,
your pelvic on mine,  an exquisite canvas

as you kiss me close, all my pores and glands,
open & beat to your overture,  your tongue

maps a trail on my palm, speaking in a language I know  -
     inviting as a morning dawn

i finally see my arm, wrist and hand now,
a tree stem, carpal bones and phalanges

reaching for you, iridescent as a butterfly,
the core of you, even more beautiful than before

  1. I really love the contrast between bones and flesh and the tenderness of love. That's beauty for sure.

  2. fascinating piece...its not an easy thing to see inside others and esp not to make a judgement on what we see...love the intimacy of the one that comes...seeing their passion and how that affects you as well...the maps on the arm....really a lovely magical piece grace...

  3. awesome piece Grace. Love the anatomical aspects to the piece, really sets an incredible mood throughout. Looking beneath and into others and in that respect life itself is difficult yet we do and because of that the beauty is found. Beautiful write. thanks

  4. that reminds me of the little prince who said we only see good with our heart...love how you captured the looking beyond the visible into the things that we only can feel and the opening up to the other's touch as well

  6. Love uniting in the emotional and physical...no greater beauty for mere mortals, I think. Wonderful from the first to the last, Grace.

  7. How beautiful to take the dissected reality of the body and contrast/merge it with the beauty of human love. Although I find such incredible beauty in the whole mystery of the body (except for when I had to watch autopsies in nursing school)

  14. you sure went deep into the human body today, in a beautiful way. Although that pic can be kinda creepy too, zombies ate them dry? lol

  16. True, there is a lot of beauty beneath the surface. Not too many would be able to love or be loved if they only focused on surface beauty.

You write with so much vulnerability and passion, Grace. :-) Wonderful.

  19. WOW!! I am breathing deeper after holding my breath and then hyperventilating. Your poem exercised me to link the beauty of bones (covered in life) with the grace of passion.

I am learning that the beauty of aging hands does not come without pain.

  24. Grace,

Beauty disclosed under the layers of human flesh..what is left is a naked soul..nothing to hide.

This is so much more than a passion poem ... it is about accepting oneself, I think ... although it seems it comes through the eyes of another -
